Our Vision

The Suffolk Humane Society was born in 2007 from a group of committed volunteers that saw how many animals were relinquished by their owners in Suffolk. These people wanted to make a change and vowed to partner with the City of Suffolk’s Animal Care Center to get the word out about adoptable animal’s right here in our community. These volunteers also made a commitment to help people understand the importance of spaying and neutering our pets to try and control the vast pet overpopulation problem right here in Suffolk.

The City of Suffolk operates the Suffolk Animal Care Center, which is our municipal animal control agency and it is run by the City of Suffolk government. The Suffolk Animal Care Center is responsible for the following:

• Enforcement of licensing, rabies vaccination and running at large complaints
• Rescue of injured or sick stray pets and the temporary care and shelter of injured wildlife
• Administration of an adoption program that enables individuals and families to select an animal whose behavior is suitable for the lifestyle of the potential adopter
• Program services to educate the public about inhumane treatment of animals
• Assistance to the Health Department and Game Commission in rabies-related incidents involving wild and domestic cases

The Suffolk Humane Society is a private, non-profit agency that is primarily run through the help of volunteers. We work to provide education and information to people in Suffolk about the plight of homeless animals and educate on spay/neuter programs.

Today, the Suffolk Humane Society is proud to report that our successful relationship with the Suffolk Animal Care Center has helped increase adoptions at the Suffolk Animal Care Center as well as provide a regular, low-cost spay/neuter option for community members and their animal companions. We regularly provide community education and have a strong presence in the community as the place to go if you have questions about animals.

Because of the partnership between the Suffolk Animal Care Center and the Suffolk Humane Society, thousands of animals have found homes since our inception in 2007.
